To prepare for our school wide celebration of art, Artist on the Green, our class completed different art projects this week. Mrs. Robinson brought in her homemade quilts. We read a story about quilt making.

We also designed our own quilt square for our class quilt. (It was a paper quilt.)

In the science center, we observed how wood can change forms after sanding it. Mrs. Robinson also shared some of her wood carvings.

In the art center, we finger painted a large picture and named it. They look beautiful in our classroom art gallery.

In the math center we created different pictures using pattern blocks. Each sheet had a different set of patterns. For each pattern, we had to use a different number of blocks. It was as challenge!

In the writing center, we created greeting cards using stamps.

We used a magnify glass to observe the wood shavings and wood.

Wow! What a neat project! They came up with this idea on their own.

A Splash of Color!

This week we studied the 3 primary colors and completed science experiments mixing the colors. To introduce the primary colors, each child had their own transparent colored circle and as we sang a song about the colors, they held them to the light to make the secondary colors.
It has become one of their favorite songs.

After reading A Color of His Own, they picked 2 primary colors and mixed the paint to find out what color the chameleon would be. They had to record their findings on the sheet.

After reading Who Said Red? They designed their own kite. It was a great listening exercise.

To get ready for 1st grade, we've started doing a lot more whole group activities.

In the math center, we sorted paint samples by color and then had to sort them from lighest to darkest. We drew a color and shape pattern when we were finished.

We've had fun reading big books when we go to the reading center.

We used water color paints in art.

In the math center, we sorted 3-d shapes. Can you believe they have to identify these in kindergarten?

Mixing colored water using an eye dropper.

We learned how to do this with Mrs. Robinson before it was put in the science center.

Mixing colors and recording our answers in the science center

We picked 2 colored ice cubes, predicted what color it would make, let it melt and discovered if our prediction was true.

Recording our results

Have you ever eaten a rainbow? They sure taste yummy!

On the Hunt for the Leprechaun!

The leprechaun made a few stops in our classroom this week. After we entered the classroom to find we had a visitor, we all checked our traps to see if we caught the "Wee Little Man".

Things were missing from our traps, but there was no leprechaun to be found.

On his 2nd visit he left us a clue to look in the fridge. In the fridge we found a recipe to make Leprechaun Pie.

We were trying to decide if we should trust the leprechaun and make the pie.

We decided to give it a try!

After making the pie, we enjoyed homemade potato soup. Mrs. Robinson is a wonderful cook and we always enjoy her snacks!

At each of our tables was a 1/2 of a raw potato. We enjoyed touching it and looking at it.

Mr. Farmer, another kindergarten teacher, always makes us laugh! He scared Mrs. Robinson!

We came back from lunch on St. Patrick's Day to find that the leprechaun left us another clue! He took the pie we made!

We went on a hunt around the school, checking all the freezers for our pie!

Our last stop was the teacher's lounge!

We had 3 freezers to check in there!
Nope...not there!

We made ourselves comfortable in the teacher's lounge!

Can you tell by Mrs. Robinson's face that we finally found the pie!

Mr. Bolger, our Principal, was in the lounge enjoying his lunch when we interrupted! Mr. Bolger is from Ireland and Sam made him a t-shirt to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!
